Poli 215: Political Psychology-An Introduction

This course offers a broad overview of the interdisciplinary field of political psychology. It draws on psychological theories and concepts to examine central questions in contemporary political life. The first part of the course focuses on belief systems and how citizens develop their political attachments. The second portion of the course examines social identities, stereotypes, and intergroup threat as themes that underlie a broader discussion of contemporary affective polarization. The final component of the course explores how emotional reactions and individual psychological differences impact political attitudes and decision-making.

Poli 209: Analyzing Public Opinion, UNC-Chapel Hill

This course teaches students how to analyze public opinion empirically. It challenges students to think about factors that influence public attitudes on political issues, primarily in the United States. In Poli 209, we cover basic statistical and programming techniques (in R) to analyze public opinion data.

In this course, students pose research questions about topics of interest and develop theoretically grounded hypotheses. After receiving feedback, students submit a final survey, which they field on a convenience sample. They then use R to analyze the data they receive and compile each element of their project into a final presentation.
